Was telling him i dont love him the right thing to do?

I am in love with a man who doesnt love me in return. but he wants me to be there for him. He has wanted me to be his friend, we were engaged for 2 years and he suddenly decided we werent right for each other. So he left me high and dry because our money was tied into the house we were supposed to move into. which he moved into alone. I am tired of bieng there at his convenience, when he wants me around. so the last time i was there, he decided that we shouldnt stay the night together, becuase it was too much for him. so the next day I told him that I realized that i am not in love with him. that it just hit me and now i am moving on. and he got all pissy, like i was hurting him by not loving him anymore, i dont get it. should i have not told him that and kept on hurting myself?
