Unplugged cable in LAN icon?

i have an asus eeepc 1001pxd. i've had this thing for less than a week. it's not allowing me to connect to the internet. people have suggested changing my internet settings and i tried that. i reinstalled the drivers, unplugged the modem and restarted it, tried to connect in safe mode, but none of that worked. my internet is fine because it works on the desktop with no problems. is the NIC faulty? I've tried multiple ethernet cords too. it keeps saying unplugged cable whenever i plug the ethernet cord in. it'll say identifying for like 5 seconds and then i get that error. what should i do? get it serviced?
