It depends what they did. Many simply grew what they needed, on land the church allowed them to use either free or at little rent. Some worked for others and were paid very little. Fortunately for them, in several eras there was no inflation. As to females -- evidently up to 1350 most of the beer in England was brewed by women. Margery Kempe operated "a brewery and a grain mill -- both common home-based businesses for medieval women." Women were in various occupations, peasant and otherwise.
